Are deleted emails ever truly gone?

Hi everyone. I always assumed that deleting an email made it disappear for good, but I recently read that even after emptying Trash, emails can remain on servers, backups, or in metadata. How does this actually work, and can an email ever be fully erased?

Hello. It's more complicated than it looks. Deleted emails often linger in Trash folders, backups, or server archives, and metadata like sender, recipient, and timestamps can stay indefinitely.
