I'm interested in buying my first Japanese sword, but I'm finding it difficult to understand the differences between the various types and materials available.

What should a beginner look for when choosing a quality Japanese sword? Are high-carbon steel and hand-forged blades the best options? I'd also like to know whether a sword meant for display differs significantly from one designed for training or collection.
